Protect Your Skin – May is Skin Cancer Prevention Month

Every May, we observe Skin Cancer Prevention Month to raise awareness about the most common form of cancer in the United States. With over 5 million cases diagnosed each year, skin cancer is both widespread and largely preventable. This month is the perfect time to educate yourself and take simple steps to protect your skin year-round.

Why Skin Cancer Prevention Matters

Skin cancer doesn’t discriminate—it can affect anyone, regardless of age, skin tone, or gender. The three major types are:

  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) – the most common and least aggressive

  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) – can spread if untreated

  • Melanoma – the deadliest, but highly treatable when caught early

The good news? Most skin cancers are preventable with smart sun habits and early detection.

Simple Steps for Skin Cancer Prevention

1. Apply Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen Daily
Use an SPF of 30 or higher—even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

2. Seek Shade Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
This is when UV rays are strongest. If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek cover.

3. Wear Protective Clothing
Long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses are effective barriers against the sun.

4. Avoid Tanning Beds
Tanning beds emit harmful UV rays that significantly increase your risk of melanoma.

5. Perform Regular Skin Checks
Look for new or changing spots, moles, or growths. Use the ABCDE method to assess moles:

  • Asymmetry

  • Border irregularity

  • Color variation

  • Diameter larger than a pencil eraser

  • Evolving shape or size

6. See a Dermatologist Annually
Professional skin exams are key for early detection.

Get Involved

During Skin Cancer Prevention Month, you can:

  • Share sun safety tips on social media

  • Support skin cancer research foundations

  • Organize a hat or sunscreen drive for local schools or sports teams

Healthy skin is always in. Protect it with care and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Skin Cancer Prevention Month is not just about awareness—it’s about action.
